What You Should Know About Gutter Installation

Obviously, gutters have been around for a long time. Gutter screens are basically like a fine-meshed screen that covers the very bottom of your guttering. They usually come in either black or white color, and they're super easy to install. If you choose to use them, they'll be attached over top of your existing gutters then clipped down so it stays in place. The purpose is to keep debris from getting into the back end of the gutter, as well as reduce large amounts of water going up and under your siding (which tends to cause rot). It's highly recommended if you decide on opening up your back end with an open ended type.

What are Gutter Guards and How Do They Work?

Gutter guards are pretty much the exact same thing as gutter screens, with one huge difference. They're basically a plastic mesh that hangs over top of your gutters to catch any debris or other objects that might fall into them. Something else to note is that they actually sit on TOP of your existing gutters, while the screens sit at the bottom of it all. I've even seen these in solid colors that match your siding without screening so it looks like you don't have any sort of protection going on. You can also get a few different types – there's screen nets, phantom mesh, and leaf deflectors too.

However, gutter guards aren't nearly as popular as screens. Gutter guards can come apart (they are removable after all) and if the sun is shining on them just right they can get HOT. In fact, hot enough to start a fire! Screens may be more of an investment up front cost-wise and you're going to want to trim any plants or tree branches that enter into your yard to make sure nothing catches on fire. You'll also need to take out your screens during winter when you're shoveling snow off your roof so it doesn't cause issues with the screen mesh itself. Feathers are another thing people have found caught in their screens as well – but these things can happen with gutter guards too!

How Do I Know if I Should Buy Screened Gutters or Closed End Gutters?

You should choose screened gutters if:

• If it is possible for debris (what kind depends on what type of debris and where you live) to get into the area between your gutter system and roof from any direction – this could include things like branches and rocks.

What is the Average Lifespan of Gutters?

You should expect your gutters to last for about 50 years if installed properly.

If you live in a region where there is very little rainfall, or high amounts of exposure to the elements, then their lifespan may be a bit shorter than that — around 30 years. 

In areas where you experience a lot of rainfall and harsh sun conditions, gutters can last between 60-70 years easily.
